Theater productions abound in San Diego! Current and opening shows include: In Every Generation by the San Diego Rep, In the Heights at the San Diego Musical Theatre, Mala (again, some of the shows will be in Spanish) at the Old Globe, and Mud Row at the Old Town Theatre. Hadestown at the Civic Theatre opened on Tuesday. Tonight, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum begins at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater. Shorter-run theatrical shows are mentioned below.
The San Diego International Fringe Festival is in full swing. All tickets are $10, and almost all the performances are being held either at the Centro Cultural de la Raza or the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre, both of which are in Balboa Park. Offerings that have cross-cultural or international themes include:
Friday to Sunday, San Diego's oldest ethnic religious celebration, Annual Festa do Espirito Santo, will take place in Point Loma.
Friday (today), the second annual City Heights Street Food Fest will be an evening of live art, music, drinks, community, and diverse street food. At the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living, there will be a Carnatic Concert featuring vocalist Vani Ramamurthi accompanied by Anirudh Bharadwaj on flute and Raamkumar Balamurthi on Mridangam. Acclaimed Cuban-American jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandova will perform at Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla. Flamenco Sur Dance Company will present A Night in Sevilla at the La Jolla Community Center.
Saturday, the annual Sam Hinton Folk Festival will take place in Poway. The Media Arts Center San Diego will present its annual iVIE Student Awards & Film Festival at the Reading Cinema in Town Center. The event is a local K-12 student video
competition and festival conceived to encourage and reward teachers and students who recognize the power of video as a creative and educational tool. Also on Saturday, you can take a docent-led Mingei Museum Tour. The animated film Encanto will be showing atop the Manchester Hyatt. The House of Denmark will hold its annual Lawn Program. At the Central Library, there will be an opening for the new Echoes of Africa Exhibition. The exhibition will run until the end of August. If you have ever suffered Abba-mania, you indulge yourself by watching Mamma Mia! Saturday evening at the Hyatt. The House of Ukraine will hold a Candlelight Vigil for those who have perished, been injured and been displaced by the war.
Sunday, the House of Mexico will hold its annual Lawn Program, and they will be celebrating the opening of their new cottage. There will be an opening for the French Film Festival at The Lot La Jolla in which you can dine on French cuisine and watch the film Delicious. After the opening party, the remainder of the films will be screened online from June 6 to June 12. Here is a listing of the films that will be available.
Tuesday, (Don't forget to VOTE!), Yale Strom and Hot Pstromi will be headlining the 21st Annual Klezmer Summit at the Lyceum. They will perform a special tribute to Ukraine. Slated to perform are Yale Strom, Elizabeth Schwartz, Fred Benedetti, Gunnar Biggs, Peter and Trip Sprague, Gilbert Castellanos, Efim Chorny, Susan Ghergus, Petra Ernyei, Adam Tvrny, and LVTAKdance. Indian-born Instagram phenom and poet Rupi Kaur will perform at Balboa Theatre.
Wednesday, the San Diego County Fair kicks off a month of festivities. While is predominantly a celebration of Americana, international-style food and performances are always part of the mix. This year Los Tigres del Norte, Ramon Ayala, La Adictiva are slated to perform (at an additional cost for concert tickets). The Wailers, Outlaw Mariachi, and "Experience Selena" will perform at no additional cost. At the Balboa Park Club there will be a Philippine Day Luncheon.
Next Friday and Saturday, the Visionary Dance Theatre will stage the dance production Half Black, Half Mexican Gay Mormon Boy from Ogden, Utah.
Next Friday, Teatro San Diego’s production of Songs for a New World begins with weekend performances until June 26th.
Next Saturday, the 24th Annual Conference on Raza Prisoners and Colonialism will be held at the Malcolm X Library. The 8th Annual Fundraiser for Chicano Park will take place at the Chicano Art Gallery in Barrio Logan. Eight-time Grammy Award winning reggae band leader Stephen Marley will perform at Humphrey's by the Bay.
Next Sunday, the House of Philippines will hold their annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages. Tejano band Intocable will perform at the Balboa Theatre.
